High Performance ADU

We took a deep dive into high performance building techniques while exploring the possibility of a 2-story backyard ADU in SE Portland. A compact design that adhered to the floor area restrictions imposed by Portland’s ADU zoning laws, and the fact that the property already contained an attached ADU, lead to an optimized floor plan and roof deck solution.

Mass plywood panel floors, designed to replace traditional floor joist construction, saved precious inches to stay within zoning height restrictions and still allow ample roof insulation and interior ceiling heights.

Ultimately unbuilt due to the economic changes of the mortgage market throughout 2023, a completed Construction Documents level set of plans was provided to the client for a hopeful future build.
